CREATEd for Worship

 by Leanne Purvis

How do you worship God?  Did you know God created us to worship Him? John 4:23 declares “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.”  Churches often begin with ‘Praise and worship,’ but there are so many more ways to worship God. We can worship God in song, prayer, art, in fact even our lives can be an act of worship.

Recently I was challenged to worship God in creative ways.  Perhaps like me you do not consider yourself creative. Yet as children most of us enjoy writing and creating pictures. Over time we may compare our work with others, and decide to pursue other interests.  However being creative in worship can be a great release.  Mindful colouring has become popular, but what about creating your own picture?  After all, we are created in God’s image.  Genesis 1:27 declares “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”  That means we are designed to create.  But where should one start?

We are commanded to meditate on God’s word (Josh 1:8; Phil 4:8; Psalm 1:2), so that is an excellent place to start for worship.  By choosing a chapter or passage, and reading it a couple of times over God can begin to give us a picture when we ask him.  Using whatever you have, let your creative side loose either in poetry, paints, pencils or even the iPad.  Personally I’ve enjoyed creating pictures on the iPad where I can either use stick figures, or trace a picture.  I can create my picture in layers, and if I don’t like them they are easily edited or erased.  Whilst my pictures are unlikely to win me any awards, I find it a great way to explore a verse or passage.  I like to add a bible verse to my picture, and find it easier to memorise and personalise with a picture associated.  I encourage you to give it a try, either in the privacy of your own space, or invite some friends around and create together!

Leanne and her husband are currently attending Bible and culture school in Tasmania in preparation for serving as long term missionaries in Cambodia.  Their goal is to encourage the local churches, support the local pastors, assist with discipleship snd church planting, particularly in areas that have not had an opportunity to hear the freeing good news of Jesus sacrifice to restore us to life with the Father.
